How Is Paper Cup Cost Calculated?
Determining Paper Cup Machine Size and Cup Grammage
You can easily calculate the cost of any paper cup size based on its grammage. In this article, we will calculate the average production cost of 6oz cups, which are commonly used as tea cup sizes in the Central Anatolia Region.
A standard 6oz paper cup is typically produced from 135gr + 15PE laminated paper.
When 1 ton of paper is cut for 6oz cups without embossing, approximately 408,000 side-wall blanks are obtained.
We would like to point out that products known and sold in the market as 6.5oz often actually consist of 5.2oz, 5.7oz, or 6oz sizes.
Bottom Paper Consumption and Cost
When producing standard tea cup sizes on paper cup machines, bottom paper consumption is approximately 20%.
This means:
- From 1000 kg of paper rolls cut into side-wall blanks (408,000 side-wall pieces),
- If bottom paper of the same grammage is used, about 200 kg of bottom paper is required.
- However, since heavier grammage bottom papers are generally preferred, this may increase to approximately 250 kg.
Note: The quantities provided are based on the 6oz cutting die used in Koresan Ambalaj’s printing and die-cutting machine. Quantities may vary for other manufacturers.
What Is the Total Paper Cost Per Carton of Paper Cups?
Side-Wall Paper Cost
1 ton of side-wall paper:
1000 kg × 1.43 USD = 1430 USD + VAT
Bottom Paper Cost
200 kg of bottom paper:
200 kg × 1.43 USD = 286 USD + VAT
Printing Cost
Printing for 1 ton of side-wall paper:
1000 kg × 0.09 USD = 90 USD + VAT
Total Cost
1430 USD + 286 USD + 90 USD = 1806 USD + VAT
In this calculation, a total of 1200 kg of paper was used. The approximate number of cups obtained is 408,000 pieces.
In Turkey, one carton contains 3,000 paper cups.
Therefore:
408,000 / 3,000 = 136 cartons
The total cost of 1806 USD + VAT corresponds to:
Cost per Carton
1806 USD / 136 cartons = 13.27 USD + VAT
VAT on paper cup raw materials in Türkiye is 20%.
